I got a new camera a couple of weeks ago. I decided to upgrade from my beloved Nikon D40 to the Nikon D7000. Hee haw, ride ‘em cowboy! I am so excited. I’ve been thinking and shopping for a new camera for about a year. I like the reviews Ken Rockwell does over at his super duper informative blog—which is what led me to decide on the Nikon D7000. I highly recommend his blog when doing camera shopping if you’re an amateur like I sure am. Good concise information that is easily understood.
It’s winter and it’s ugly here in Utah by February, not much in the way of colorful things to photograph, but I’ve been trying to get out more with my heavy down coat, beanie, and gloves and take some pictures. It’s been good for my winter-weary soul. I wish I had the patience to spell out all my reasons why I went with this camera over the other Nikons, but I don’t. So instead, I’ll just show you some of my photos in the last two weeks:
Below photo of my sweet girl (Yes, I focused on her hat so her face is a tad out of focus, oh well) on her birthday week taken with my favorite Nikkor 35mm lens:
Camera Settings: 1/100, ƒ/1.8, ISO 100, 35 mm, processed in Photoshop Elements, used “Golden Afternoon Action” from coffeeshopblog.com
Happy Valentine’s Day shot seen below, same processing as above photo.
Below photos taken at 5pm when sun was setting on her 9th birthday:
I used my new lens as well: Nikon d7000, Nikon 18-200mm VRII lens, shutter speed: 1/320, ISO: 100, aperture: f/5.6, focal length 170mm
This one is my favorite: The sun is behind me, setting quickly, and the light just fell into the trees perfectly
Nikon d7000, Nikon 18-200mm VRII lens, 1/160, ƒ/5.6, ISO 100, 170 mm. Processed with “Boost” action from coffeeshopblog
These next two were taken at 8am on a VERY foggy morning.
Don’t horses get cold?
Today I wanted to play around more with the camera settings like “Set Picture Control”. It’s fun to play around by choosing Standard, Neutral, or Vivid for images. And then adjusting the sharpness, hue, contrast, etc. from there. Below is my favorite little knick-knack in my house. It’s a very small bowl of blown glass I bought in Olympia, Washington. Again, I used my 35mm lens and the “Boost it” action from coffeeshopblog. shutter speed 1/125, ISO 125, f/2.8, 35mm.
Some more colored glass from my kitchen:
And lastly, some yummy cookies
That’s all for now! Can’t wait to have more time to get out there and shoot.

Cynthia, I upgraded to this camera back in January and LOVE it! I was nervous because there were so many reviews that claimed there was a back-focus problem but I went for it anyway and I'm so happy I did. I have to say this camera will be with me for a long time. I have found that once you find it's sweet spot on each lens, the camera is beyond amazing. I also think that this camera prefers higher-end lenses. My favorite lens right now is my Tamron 28-75, 2.8. I found that the kit lens (Nikkor 55-300, 4.5) that came with my previous camera (Nikon 5100) performs much, MUCH better on the 5100. As a matter of fact when I need/want to use it, I switch bodies. Enjoy your new camera!
